S. N. Mor Arts and Commerce College, Tumsar was established under the aegis of Gondia Education Society, Gondia in the year 1965. As a part of fulfilling long standing demand of the local youths, aspiring for higher education, and thereby, be at par with the youths of other parts of the state in the field of education, enlightenment and employment opportunities; and to cater to the needs of the surrounding, Science wing was appended in the year 1985 to the college, which came to be known as - Seth Narsingdas Arts & Commerce & Smt. Godavaridevi Saraf Science College, Tumsar. The Seth Durgaprasad Saraf came forward to extend financial support in the memory of Smt. Godawaridevi Saraf, the beloved wife of Seth Durgaprasad Saraf, the local doyen of Manganese Industry- the Managing Director of FACOR, a leading Manganese processing industry in the nation.
To begin with, there were only 103 students in B.Sc., which offered education in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM group). The subjects Botany, Zoology and Computer Science were added in 1994-95. During the same year the subject Computer Science (on no grants aided basis) was added. Presently, as many as 546 students are taking education in B.Sc. As per the affiliating university's policy, the college has adopted semester pattern since the year 2013-14. One more section on No-grants-Aided -Basis was added from the year 2017-18.
Many students have been appearing in the R. T. M. Nagpur university merit list. Ms. Rachana Agrawal was a merit student in the year 1988. Ms Babi Khandekar was felicitated with the Gold Medal on 9th Feb., 2016 in the programmme held on the occasion of the Birth Anniversary of Late Shri Manoharbhai Patel at Gondia. Ms. Samiksha Mohan Borghare of B. Sc. III has secured 6th Merit Position in Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Summer 2019 Examination. The alumni of the college have been rendering their services through various coveted posts in the country as well as abroad. Many faculty members are the authors of text books. The Science faculty students have been actively participating in the college level and university level competitions such as Debate, Poster completions, Seminars, Essay competitions, etc., and winning prizes and medals.
Dr. Subhash Pawar, Dr. G. D. Tembhare and Dr. F. M. Nirwan were the faculty members at the time of commencement of the Science wing. The teachers have been regularly publishing their research papers in the journal of high impact factors of National and International repute. Dr. Subhash Pawar, Dr. K. N. Sathawane, Dr. M. F. Jadhao and our dynamic principal- Dr. C. B. Masram presented research papers abroad in various International conferences. One of the faculty members Dr. J. V. Gadpayle has published his paper in the internationally acclaimed journal Phytotaxa. He discovered a new plant species as Amorphophallus shyamsalilianum, for the first time introduced to the entire plants of Science. He discovered one more species as Amorphophallus chargavensis and presented it at IAAT Conference Kolhapur. His works have been appreciated by the BSI and Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Govt. of India.
